READ A BOOK!

I have had several convos with my bestie, alex explaining my desire to learn. You ever heard of a freelance writer? well, i am a freelance learner. i question every damn thing, it is verrrrry hard for me to accept status quo, cuz i really don't believe in it.

I just graduated from college in may.

And it made me dumber.

Before I went on my quest for undergrad knowledge, I used to read. ALL THE TIME. Not just fictional afro-american novels by Eric Jerome Dickey or E. Lynn Harris. But novels by Micheal Crichton (who is a master-mind) and John Grisham. I was also into non-fiction about cultures, primarily Black American culture and African culture + history.

I was fondly obsessed with Egypt (I wanna wife Nefertit's breast, statue that is =) and the different tribes that inhabited the continent. I also thirst for info on the beginnings of the slave trade and how the Spanish started it but the Americans capitalized on it. And also on the stories that are often unheard of from the slave times. I love hearing about all the other Harriet Tubmans, Frederick Douglass, etc that went "unreconized." I also loved ready on Black beauty and how it has changed from the dawn of time and how it has influenced the rest of the world.

This brings me to this point:
I NEEDED A GOOD BOOK!

lol! As kids, as a means of punishment, my mom would NOT allow me and my bro to go to the library! We would get hella pissed, and then as I grew older, my friends thought I was a complete goober when I would expose this fact to them.

This raised a question--
Was I the idiot that loved literary masterpieces and craved them so or where those around me victims of a unintelligent society?

I know my friends are not stupid (the 2 I do have :) but I wondered nonetheless....

One day at the hairshop, I was reading Essence and there was an article about the book called For Colored Girls Who Have Considered Suicide When the Rainbow is Enuf. It is a choreopoem by Ntozake Shange and it is AMAZING...there are about 7-8 characters that move the story along. Each of them are noted as a color and from a different US city and talk about their experiences growing up Black in the 70s.

&&& I am pretty sure I am a feminist:

My bestie Alex reads this publication called Bitch: a feminist response to pop culture. In the magazine, there are articles written by Feminists that are meant to commentary on current events. I love it. It is a pub that is for the woman (or man...) that does not accept the status quo as is, they congratulate opinions based on sound reasoning and logic. The array of topics are spelendid, as they are not the same ol thing you read everyday in the newspaper or in dumb ass Cosmo (a magazine I have always hated).
